When they lose connection I will open the printer properties and go to the ports tab, only to find a completely blank page that should be filled with all the info for all the printers. After removing and re-adding to domain, the blank page is completely filled with info as it should be.

I manually build each of the pc's and manually add each network printer. They work for a while, and then something triggers them to lose connection. We may have found a resolution to this issue. Windows Server doesn't support this new protocol and when Windows 7 tries to communicate. The result is the blank driver tab and port tab.

Lawrie Dalman Consulting is an IT service provider. Hey Syndi, what kind of connection is being used? Print server or direct to the network printer? Do you by chance have these Windows 7 machines attaching to a Server 2k3 print server?

Do the Windows 7 PCs ever loose connection to file shares? Do you have access to a packet sniffer like Wireshark or the like, or are you familiar with Network Monitor? That's why I mentioned Wireshark first, it's quite a bit more powerful and intuitive to use. There is a known problem sometimes occurs between Vista and Windows 7 attaching to server 2k3 shares, printer and file, caused by the differences between SMB1 and SMB2, you can confirm this is the problem by monitoring the packet conversation between the server and one of your more likely to fail Windows 7 PCs.

There is lots of info on the web about this issue, but before you make drastic changes you're better off confirming the problem. See what you think once you've reviewed the issue at a packet level. You will also have no trouble finding more to read about the issue if you need to. BTW: disabling bi-directional printer communication will have no effect on the loss of file share connections between your Windows 7 PCs and Server 2k3. But it's an easy thing to try to prevent loosing printer connections, this would normally effect your XP PCs as well.

Had problems with win7 and network printers as you have noted And with my users, if they have control over changing settings, etc. I have tried deleting this dll, editing the HKLM spooler driver 3 location as per a possible fix and nothing has helped. I can delete all the printer and re-install them via GPO and I get the same problem.

When this happens an I go to check any network printer and look at Ports I see not a one. I bounce the spooler and the ports come back - for a short time 2 mins then the spooler stops the ports go away and I'm back where I began. I'd love to up-grade my print server to W2K8, but that is not possible at this time. Please help me! Monday, March 15, PM.
